Ubud Hanging Gardens

Eco-sensitive Ubud Hanging Gardens lives up to its name. The waters of the Ayung River rush below. Lush jungle folds around the resort. Villas are staggered at intervals down the hillside, connected to each other and the restaurant, café, reception area and spectacular infinity pool by a funicular. And located 20 minutes outside Bali’s most artistic town, it offers complete removal from the rest of the world.

  • Rooms 38 villas, including two suites.
  • More details Rates include breakfast.
  • Facilities Free internet throughout (WiFi in public areas, broadband in rooms), library, spa, boutique, gardens, free shuttle service to Ubud. In rooms: flatscreen TV, CD/DVD player, iPod dock (in Panoramic Deluxe Pool Villa/Suite), minibar, natural toiletries.
  • Poolside The vast, curvaceous, two-tier infinity pool follows the contours of the landscape and hangs over the lush Balinese jungle. Take up a position at one of its waterside sun loungers or opt for privacy in the bale beside your own infinity plunge pool.
  • Check-out Officially midday, but late departures can be accommodated for a fee (half a day until 5 pm; a full day thereafter). Check-in, 2 pm.
  • Children Mini Smiths are welcome in this beautiful natural setting, although due to the rather steep topography you’ll have to keep a close eye on toddlers. Cots are provided for free, and babysitting is available for US$10 an hour.
  • Also Smoking is permitted in outdoor areas, the bar and cafe.
Hotel closed No check-ins or check-outs are allowed on 31 March 2014, when Bali observes Nyepi Day (Day of Silence), although stays are still possible. Bali’s airport also closes for the day.

Accommodation

38 Pool Villas including:

  • 15 Riverside Deluxe Pool Villas
  • 15 Panoramic View Deluxe Pool Villas
  • 2 Panoramic View Pool Villa Suite
  • 6 Duplex Family Pool Villas
  • Hotel restaurant The main event is Beduur Restaurant, where the chef incorporates local produce – organic vegetables, fruit and spices from nearby farms, seafood from Jimbaran Bay’s markets – in his French-Asian fusion cuisine. Try infused lime leaf and coconut miso soup with shrimps, calamari, salmon, Asian mushrooms and wakame or steamed butter fish wrapped in banana leaf medley with spicy oil. At lunchtime, the more casual Diatas Pohon Café serves light meals along with healthy juices and fruit frappes, and is the venue for the daily afternoon tea ritual.
  • Dress code Forget statement dressing. In this relaxed setting casual kit will look right at home. Don’t forget a cardigan or sweater in the evening, particularly, if you’re sitting outside – the jungle air can get cool.
  • Top table For complete solitude, a table with flickering candlelight can be set in the bale by your pool. Those celebrating a birthday or anniversary, perhaps, should ask about the ‘secret destination’ dinner. We can’t say where it is, but it’s spectacular.
  • Last orders Both restaurant and bar service wraps up by 11pm.
  • Room service The full menu from Beduur Restaurant can be delivered to your villa between 7am and 11pm.
  • Hotel bar Vast French doors connect the interior and outdoor worlds at Bukit Becik Bar. Sprawl across the rattan sofas inside or claim one of the sun loungers on the deck to watch bright-feathered birds flying past, dragonflies buzzing and clouds moving across the sky.
